Does a Ring doorbell work without internet?
Facts last verified · Every claim is linked to its source · Methodology
Short answer: no. Ring says its devices "require an active internet connection." 1 Recording and reviewing video also needs a Ring subscription. 2
Can Ring record locally?
Only with Ring Edge: a Ring Alarm Pro base station stores video on a microSD card. It needs a compatible Ring subscription, the cameras must be on the Alarm Pro's eero network, and Ring Edge supports 1080p devices only, not 2K or 4K. 3
Does Ring offer end-to-end encryption?
Yes, optionally, on most current models including battery models. Turning it on disables features like Familiar Faces, Alexa viewing, shared users and third-party integrations. Older models such as the original Video Doorbell and Stick Up Cam 1st/2nd Gen are excluded. 4
Does Ring work with Home Assistant locally?
No. The official Home Assistant Ring integration is Cloud Polling. 5
Were Ring product names changed?
Yes. In Jul–Aug 2026 Ring renamed many devices, for example Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) became Wired Doorbell 4K Pro and Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) became Battery Doorbell 2K. 6 See our rename list.
